And as a result of searching for good skin care products, most women rely on whatever brand that is popular in the market. One Best Rule for Skin Care

For women who want to make their skin look and feel best, the secret is to choose the correct skin care products that would fit their skin type. They should start with any product that catches their eyes because not all skin care products are made with the same ingredients.

Not all skin care products that are sold in the department stores are good for you. Choose a product based on the criteria recommended by several skin care experts and dermatologists. Yes, you’ll find dozens of over-the-counter products with labels like “maximum strength” and “original prescription strength.” But knowing what these labels mean and how to know if the product suits you is important.

How Much is the Active Ingredient in the Product?

Products with active ingredient are usually similar to the one found in its prescription counterpart, but with a lower dosage. One example is the over-the-counter dandruff shampoo that contains a lower dosage of the active ingredient with one percent “ketoconazole” and the prescription-strength version that contains two percent.

Another example is the hydrocortisone anti-itch cream with a maximum over-the-counter dosage of one percent and prescription-strength creams containing 2.5 percent.

Don’t Get Yourself Blinded By Marketing Strategy

Sometimes, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot strictly monitor the over-the-counter skin care products. Hence, some companies label their product with “maximum strength” or “clinical strength” with no guarantee that it will be any stronger compared to other products in the market.

According to Robyn Gmyrek, MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, the best way to identify whether you are indeed getting the “maximum” strength of the product is to check the ingredients label. Compare the name and check the percentage of the active ingredient in each product.

Choose Products Approved by FDA

For the FDA to approve the product’s switch from over-the-counter to prescription-strength status, they require companies to show that the slight increase of the active ingredient could change the structure or function of the skin.

The Right Skin Care Product for You

Start with a lower dosage of the product. Dermatologist recommends trying the basic OTC product for a minimum of two weeks to see the results. When it shows good results, move to the maximum or clinical-strength product. It is also recommended to request a prescription from the dermatologists.
